Marcel Duchamp is the most influential and important artist of the twentieth century, and quite possibly of all time. He singlehandedly changed Art as the world knows it, and destroyed the art-object through his intellect. While a case could be made for Pablo Picasso and Paul Cezanne, their influence did not extend as far as Duchamp's.
